In my last series, we explored how the frameworks in the BABOK can transform an organization’s strategy and operating model. We talked about North Stars, Lead Dominoes, and the “brain, heart, and limbs” of a business.
But how do you actually do it?
If strategy is the destination, business analysis techniques are the GPS. Most leaders fail to reach their goals not because they lack vision, but because they skip the foundational steps required to make that vision a reality.
This series explores four techniques that can help leaders make better decisions and reduce avoidable rework.
1. Root cause analysis: Solving problems vs. implementing solutions. Most companies are “solution-rich and problem-poor.” They spend millions on software to fix symptoms without ever touching the root cause. We will show you how to identify and articulate the actual problem before you spend a dime on the fix.
2. Current state analysis: The “reality check”. You cannot plan a route if you don’t know where you are standing. We’ll talk about what a current-state analysis really looks like—beyond the spreadsheets—and how its practical application prevents “Strategy Drift.”
3. Business requirements: The lost art. Projects can lose direction when a feature list takes the place of clear business requirements. I’ll show you how to define what the business actually needs to happen, which is a very different conversation than what the system does.
4. Solutions analysis: The art of “The Hash”. Now for the fun part. Once you are armed with a concise problem statement, a clear current state, and validated business requirements, you can finally facilitate The Hash. We’ll explore how to play with “What if?” scenarios to find the most innovative, high-value path forward.
Whether you are a CEO, a department head, or an aspiring Lead, these aren’t “IT skills.” They are decision-making skills.
